This painting was the beginning — the one that started everything. "Almost" is the first and largest of a nine-piece series I called "While Listening to Jazz," and every painting that followed grew from this one.
It started with a vision of my daddy's farm. I sketched in the barn, but as I painted, it shifted — became a house, became our house on the farm. That's how memory works, I suppose. It rolls around quietly in the back of your mind until it finds its way onto the canvas.
The colors are the soul of this series: vivid greens mixed from Ultramarine Blue, Hansa Yellow Medium, Yellow Ocher, and White; and a turquoise sky built from Phthalo Turquoise and Cerulean Blue, with just a touch of Cadmium Orange to soften it. I love how it all turned out.
